Discovering the World of Business School Rankings
Ellen Boeren
Chapter 9 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 107-118 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
QS, THE, and Shanghai each produce subject rankings that include dedicated league tables on business-related subjects. This chapter introduces the reader to a wider selection of specialist business school rankings which constitute a niche market within the international rankings’ industry. It provides an overview of the role and characteristics of business schools and their dedicated MBA programmes. The chapter discusses examples of business school rankings as published by leading magazines and newspapers. Afterwards, it introduces the reader to QS's interest in MBA and relevant Master level programme rankings. Examples of ranking indicators in such specialist rankings demonstrate the stronger focus on employability and potential returns on investment compared to other rankings. It provides an example of a comparison between a subject ranking and specialist Master ranking in the domain of marketing to demonstrate the need to grasp insights into the influence of ranking methodologies in predicting ranking performances.
