Introduction to The Growth–Environment Debate

Ryan M. Katz-Rosene

Chapter Chapter 1 in The Growth–Environment Debate, 2025, pp 1-24 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces readers to the growth–environment debate. It starts with the story of two young graduate students who helped produce the now-famed Limits to Growth report by the Club of Rome in the early 1970s, and then introduces readers to the “Growth–Environment Paradox”- the main heuristic device upon which the core content of the book is founded. The chapter briefly explains the core conceptual foundations of the book, introducing ecological political economy, critical discourse analysis, and the basic social, economic, and environmental indicators linked to the growth–environment debate to readers.
