Growth Misses the Point: the Steady State and A-growth
Ryan M. Katz-Rosene
Chapter Chapter 4 in The Growth–Environment Debate, 2025, pp 77-95 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter covers a variety of perspectives which emphasize how GDP growth is just one of many different indicators trying to measure progress- and a rather imprecise one at that. Instead, those within the “Growth Misses the Point” discourse coalition argue in favor of more comprehensive metrics which can measure both social and ecological wellbeing more holistically or more directly. This discourse is generally skeptical of the first tenet of the Growth–Environment Paradox- the idea that economic growth is a prerequisite for human flourishing. Instead, it tends to be somewhat agnostic on the need for growth (a position known as “A-growth”). The chapter dives into the school of thought known as Doughnut Economics, the sufficiency movement, the idea of “Steady-State” economics, and takes a closer look at an emerging frame supported by global development institutions- “Beyond GDP”- which posits that GDP alone is only one metric worth considering within assessments of sustainability and wellbeing.
