The Damage of Growth is Done: neo-Survivalism, Human Ecology, and Deep Adaptation

Ryan M. Katz-Rosene

Chapter Chapter 6 in The Growth–Environment Debate, 2025, pp 122-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This final content chapter covers perspectives proposing that- thanks to its legacy of growth- contemporary capitalism will inevitably lead to ecological collapse, and there is nothing which can be done now to avoid that fate. The chapter discusses the field of “Human Ecology,” which argues that humanity’s growth is bound to reach limits and decline because it is presently in a situation of Overshoot. It further explores the rise of “neo-Survivalism,” which includes individuals who are motivated by preparing for environmental and social and economic breakdown. The contemporary phenomenon of Climate Doomerism is also reviewed. The chapter begins by introducing the progressive “Deep Adaptation” movement, which takes a more communitarian approach to preparing for collapse than the insular neo-survivalists.
