Laura Tolettini and Eleonora Di Maria

Chapter 14 in Feminist Perspectives in Business Studies, 2025, pp 317-333 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This study explores gender equality strategies within the steel sector, focusing on the integration of the female workforce in production. By analyzing a pioneering project from an Italian steel manufacturer, the research identifies best practices and the role of Diversity and Inclusion as part of sustainable development. The theoretical framework places gender equality within the broader context of Diversity Management, highlighting both positive impacts on organizational performance and challenges in male-dominated environments. Using qualitative interviews across various clusters, the findings underscore the necessity of cultural change and inclusive leadership to support gender equality initiatives. Technological and digital innovations are seen as enablers for creating more inclusive and sustainable workplaces. The study concludes that gender equality in the steel industry can drive organizational transformation and innovation, although it requires sustained effort and commitment.
