Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 185-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Researchers recognise that business aviation is an underresearched part of civil aviation, mainly related to the lack of data to ensure the protection of the privacy of its passengers. Beyond this, the demand for business aviation is growing, and at the beginning of January 2023 it was 7% above 2019 levels. In the Western world where younger generations have become more conscious about their carbon footprint and policymakers are under pressure to apply climate policies, air transport is scrutinised like never before with respect to its environmental impact, and business aviation plays a key role in these discussions. This chapter provides an overview of the current knowledge and key literature relating to the development of business aviation. Moreover, it identifies and critically analyses current and future trends and issues about the business aviation sector under dynamic and complex circumstances, with constant tensions to balance the need for mobility and environmental sustainability.
