Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 208-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Airlines operate in a highly competitive market, experiencing small profit margins. Continually evaluating operational performance and efficiency is, therefore, all important, allowing airline operators and policymakers to ascertain how to enhance their productivity and profitability. Efficiency can be assessed at different levels, including individual airports, divisions within airlines, or for specific origin-destination routes within an airline's network. The latter are often the focus of sustained airline performance efficiency analysis, as they can aid airlines in their understanding of consumer behaviour in an O-D market and the contribution of individual routes to overall network performance. This chapter focuses on air route performance evaluation using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model based on a Taiwanese case study.
