The impact of a changing climate on airports
Rachel Burbidge
Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 313-321 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The effects of climate change, such as stronger or more frequent storms, higher average and extreme temperatures and sea level rise, will challenge airports around the world. The potential impacts are numerous and varied but include disruption to operations, damage to infrastructure and inundation of runways and terminal buildings. To ensure service continuity and protect critical infrastructure, it is vital that airports adapt and build resilience to the impacts ahead. This chapter will identify the key climate impacts that airports will need to prepare for. It will examine how airports can assess the risks they might face and identify adaptation measures they can put in place to address them. Finally, it will emphasise the importance of collaboration across the aviation network.
