Chapter 33 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 434-444 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Air transportation has experienced marked growth over the past centuries, due to increasing demand driven by various factors such as rising disposable incomes, population growth, tourism, and globalisation. Progress in technology (e.g., aircraft design), airport infrastructure, and increased global connectivity have furthered this expansion. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted the aviation industry, leading to unprecedented challenges including financial losses, layoffs, and vulnerabilities in resilience and crisis response mechanisms, exacerbating existing concerns regarding environmental sustainability and social responsibility. In this chapter, we discuss five major categories of challenges, concerning integration, inclusion, intelligence, immunisation, and implementation (the five I’s). Navigating the challenges in the post-pandemic air transportation era necessitates collective action from researchers and practitioners to contribute towards a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future for aviation. We hope that the insights from this chapter can assist the air transport management research community in concentrating and coordinating their efforts.
