Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 98-110 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Air transport is a service industry, and as such the management of people is fundamental to the success of organisations that operate in the industry. Moreover, the industry has been subject to crises that have required dramatic human resource management interventions throughout a 30-year period during which the industry has changed in ways that complicate the management of people. Recently, the promise and threat of automation have generated conflict between employers and highly skilled labour, in particular. This chapter discusses these issues and sets out a series of important research questions that might be addressed.
