Chapter 15 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 395-419 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter considers the imperatives of the development of construction companies in developing countries. It explores the theoretical framework and socio-economic context of construction company development, the challenges these companies face and the initiatives that can be taken to address them. It relates the development of construction companies within a specific context (Ghana) with the case of a company, Consar Limited, as an example and presents recommendations for improvement. This research established that most of the factors inhibiting the development of indigenous construction companies can be classified under in-systemic and ex-structural categorisation. These challenges can fully be addressed by considering contextual issues. It also established that although indigenous construction companies have actions they can take internally to develop, their development largely depends on the enabling environment created by external players such as government and industry. This enabling environment must be context-specific to ensure continuous growth of the firms.
