Chapter 21 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 541-564 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter brings together the documented achievements, challenges and prospects of construction industry development in Ghana. The history, current state, problems and practices of the construction industry are explored. The development of the construction industry in Ghana is discussed, and proposals have been made for actions, especially the formation of a central agency. Other recommendations for developing the industry include increasing support for research and innovation and establishing a construction leadership council. This chapter builds on previous studies, and identifies the major bottlenecks to the industry's development and recommends actions to address them. In addition to its main focus on institution building and administration, it proposes further research into materials development, the adoption of new technology and digitalisation and infrastructure financing. This chapter also provides suggestions for research, practice and insights for policymakers on what is needed in construction industry development in Ghana in order to improve its outcomes.
