Chapter 23 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 596-621 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The construction industry in all countries faces challenges that have an impact on its performance, affecting its ability to provide the physical basis for national development effectively and efficiently. It is suggested that governments should plan for, manage and monitor the continuous development and upgrading of the construction industry. A few countries have set up agencies to accomplish these tasks. It is beneficial to identify the determinants of success of such organisations. This chapter is special; unlike the others in this book, it is not academic in nature. It is based on the experiences of leaders of two construction industry development agencies in Africa: in Malawi and South Africa. The leaders were asked questions, including what they set out to achieve, what they attained, challenges they faced and what the future of the construction industry in their countries was. The summary of the key points from the two leaders, and suggestions for action and research in the future, are presented.
