Chapter 3 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 53-79 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Construction, as a sector of the economy, accounts for a significant share of national output and national employment. It also is a major component of a country's gross fixed capital formation and has a multiplier effect on other sectors of the national economy. Construction is a dynamic industry which accompanies the dynamics of the general economy, and modelling this relationship has to consider these changes. So, there is a need to better understand how different measures of the construction industry and related economic indicators have been evolving over time. This chapter discusses the different measures of construction-related economic indicators. Then it analyses the evolution of these economic indicators for selected developing countries and groups of Sub-Saharan Africa, since 1970 using data from the Main Aggregates and Detailed Tables of the United Nations and Penn World Tables. A perspective on the development pattern for specific groups of countries of Sub-Saharan Africa is put forward.
