Construction in Developing Countries: addressing the challenges and problems in recent research – industry-level issues and contemporary topics

George Ofori

Chapter 6 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 153-180 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Construction in Developing Countries is now a bona fide field of knowledge. Its original goal to help build the capacity and capability of the construction industries of those countries to create the production and social facilities and infrastructure the countries require is even more urgent as the gap between requirements and provisions is increasing and the standards of living of a large proportion of their populations remain poor. Following the discussion of the evolution of Construction in Developing Countries in Chapter 2, where it was suggested that the momentum of its development had slowed down, it is pertinent to consider recent works on it, to ascertain its current state. This chapter focuses on recent research on industry-level issues and some contemporary subjects. It is found that the field has shown healthy growth since 2000. The works have built on the previous literature. However, the problems of the industries identified in earlier works remain; thus, there is the need for further guided development.
