Abstract: This chapter discusses the Drinking Water Directive. It explores the obligations of Member States to protect drinking water and the sources of water from which it is produced. To this end, it discusses the concept of ‘wholesome and clean’ drinking water and the obligation to achieve this end, including the exemptions that Member States may apply and the legal characterization of this obligation. It also discusses the deterioration ban, measures to take when drinking water is not wholesome and clean, the role of indicator parameters, and the obligation to monitor drinking water. In addition, it explores the obligations regarding risk assessment and risk management as well as the interplay with the Water Framework Directive.
