Safe bathing water

Abstract: Bathing in open water is increasingly popular. The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris (France) reopened the discussion on the potential health risks of bathing in open water that are due to microbiological contamination, bulk waste and physical safety issues. The risks aside, bathing in open water evidently has positive effects on both mental and physical health. In Europe, the Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) has been developed to safeguard public health and to protect the aquatic environment in coastal and inland areas from pollution. This chapter dives into the scope and the objectives of the Bathing Water Directive and the relevant links to other Directives, as well as into its instruments and reporting requirements and into its rolling revision. It also describes several ongoing developments in urban bathing and wild swimming.
