Abstract: This chapter explores social-ecological systems approaches to water management and governance and their linkages to EU water law. The chapter begins by unpacking the key concepts, such as resilience, adaptive management and adaptive governance, shedding light on key social-ecological dynamics in systems such as river basins. The chapter then goes on to explore how the different generations of EU water law have (or have not) embraced insights from these schools of thought in seeking to improve the effectiveness of water law in regulating water management and water governance. The chapter ends with an outlook on the key means of improving EU water law in the future.
