Economic philosophy and issues of boundaries: theoretical challenges and French educational practice

Chapter 10 in Handbook of Teaching Philosophy to Economists, 2025, pp 116-134 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The question of the shifting boundaries of economics is important for understanding of this discipline's evolution, and it draws attention to a variety of connections with neighboring disciplines. This precludes us from considering that the “moving’”frontier of economics is determined exclusively by the scientific dynamics of economics. This has potential consequences for teaching at the frontiers of economics and philosophy. The point of view of economic philosophy on such frontiers is explored in this chapter. The discipline-related debates are examined with the intent of assessing possible consequences and/or challenges for teaching the philosophy of economics, or teaching about themes from both economics and philosophy. Some elements pertain to the French experience more particularly.
