Philosophy of economics/economic methodology in the economics curriculum
Ivan Boldyrev
Chapter 11 in Handbook of Teaching Philosophy to Economists, 2025, pp 136-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, I reflect on my experiences in teaching the Economic Methodology course over several years in the Economics Bachelor's program. The chapter begins by addressing definitional issues, then explores didactic challenges, and outlines the general framework used in teaching the course. It also tackles the ticklish questions of identity and unity of economics and philosophy, examining how these are reflected in the teaching practice. Finally, the chapter considers the value of economic methodology within the broader economics curriculum and draws general lessons from the experience of teaching the course in the economics program. The challenges associated with this course are instructive for understanding the ways philosophy could be taught to economists.
