Philosophical perspectives on values in economics
Magdalena Małecka
Chapter 18 in Handbook of Teaching Philosophy to Economists, 2025, pp 222-237 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the main points made in the debates about values in economic research, and it highlights five philosophical perspectives on non-epistemic values in economics that can be identified in these debates. Distinguishing between these perspectives is a scholarly proposal and a useful pedagogical tool that guides readers and students through the nuances of analyses of value-laden economic research. The chapter also suggests how analyses of the value-ladenness of economics can be further developed and deepened, based on the ways in which philosophers of science have approached this issue.
