For a philosophy of poverty economics
Judith Favereau
Chapter 20 in Handbook of Teaching Philosophy to Economists, 2025, pp 257-270 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter outlines a possible framework for a philosophy of economics on poverty. For that purpose, this chapter focuses on the measurement of poverty in economics. Assessing measurement means asking two questions: what to measure and how to measure it. Concerning poverty, the question of what relates to political philosophy. The latter plays a critical role in defining poverty, providing an underlying ethical theory. The question of how falls under the philosophy of science. However, scarce epistemological work has been conducted directly on poverty and its measurement. Philosophy of economics deals with both the philosophy of science and political philosophy. The objective of the chapter is to bring together these two dimensions of the philosophy of economics in order to provide both an understanding of the ethical and methodological problems of poverty.
