Chapter 6 in Understanding Creative Cities, 2026, pp 129-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Adopting a micro-meso-macro framework is useful for analysing creative cities. This framework emphasizes the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach in order to understand the dynamics of creative activities in urban environments. At the micro level, individual personality traits, particularly Openness to Experience, are important, as well as environmental stimuli such as diversifying experiences. The meso-level focuses on neighbourhood attributes that foster connections, such as mixed land uses, high densities and cultural diversity. At the macro level, cultural values and institutional frameworks come to the fore. Environments that cultivate creativity tend to encompass relatively individualistic cultural values and the rule of law. Spatial design considerations are important at all levels of analysis. As a general rule, smaller, more intimate spaces tend to encourage interaction and creativity. We can summarize the policy implications as three short slogans: leave space out, allow activities to take place and let people in.
