Abstract: This book opens with a contextualisation of sport in Europe and, more specifically, of European Union (EU) sport policy. Relatedly, the present chapter highlights that the ‘Nice Declaration’ of 2000 laid the foundation for the 2007 White Paper on Sport, which in turn paved the way for wider EU sport policy, including the EU Work Plan for Sport. This is the inspiration for the book. This chapter consequently outlines the contributions shaped by the Plan. These include the foundations of sport in Europe, protecting its integrity and values, its socio-economic and environmental dimensions, promotion of participation, and new technologies. These five areas are covered in 31 chapters. The aim of the book is to provide accessible overviews of current research on sport that informs the priority areas specified in Europe, highlighting why specific issues matter for sport and society, the progress that has been made and the challenges still faced.
