Abstract: This chapter summarises a quarter of a century spent defining, discussing, analysing and measuring the governance of sports organisations, mainly from a European perspective. For the future, it advocates collaborative governance between non-governmental sports organisations, the public sector and the commercial sector based on a solidarity-based sports model inspired by the ‘European model of sport’ as opposed to the privatised American model and the Russian-Chinese state model; a European model that considers sport as a ‘commons’ shared by all its stakeholders on the basis of democratically adopted rules.
