Exploring corporate social responsibility in European sports: Trends and future directions

Pierre Léonard, Géraldine Zeimers and Jeroen Scheerder

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Sport in Europe, 2026, pp 122-132 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the evolving landscape of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in European sport, analyzing key trends, practices, policies, and future directions. It explores CSR's conceptual development within the European socio-political context, where stakeholder-oriented approaches and regulatory frameworks play a crucial role. The chapter highlights key elements of the European context that shape CSR in European sport, including the structure of the European Sport Model and the European Union's (EU) influence through policies such as the European Green Deal and sustainability reporting directives. Given the regional variations in CSR implementation across Europe, the chapter underscores the need for context-specific approaches and proposes future research avenues, including cross-regional comparisons of CSR practices, assessments of the long-term impact of EU policies on sport organizations’ CSR strategies, and explorations of whether a unique European CSR model in sport exists.
