Abstract: The field of sport ecology examines the relationship between sport and the natural environment, recognising that this link is bidirectional. This chapter summarises the literature on sport and the environment, highlighting how sport impacts the environment by, e.g., generating carbon emissions and using natural resources, while being influenced by climate change and environmental factors. The discussed literature focuses on the research context of Europe and reviews studies for individuals who actively participate in sport but who are also passive sport consumers, sport organisations, and events. Furthermore, a sport political perspective on sport ecology is presented. Frameworks and strategies for assessing and managing environmental challenges are explored, underscoring the role of sport organisations in promoting pro-environmental behaviour and contributing to sustainability objectives.
