Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Sport in Europe, 2026, pp 144-156 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the evolving landscape of sports facility provision across Europe, examining recent developments and pressing challenges such as availability, accessibility, condition, sustainability, and financing. As sports facilities set the stage for promoting physical activity and community engagement, their adaptability to societal changes, changing demands, and economic pressures is paramount. We assess whether current facilities are truly “fit for the future”, and, drawing from various perspectives, emphasize the need for a targeted, needs-oriented, sustainable, and cooperative approach to sports facility management – one that balances economic efficiency with community needs, ensuring that sports facilities continue to serve as vital resources in a rapidly changing society.
