Chapter 17 in Research Handbook on Sport in Europe, 2026, pp 180-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Scholars, practitioners, and policymakers have long been interested in assessing the value of sport in Europe for various reasons, including the need to evidence and articulate the contribution of sport to the economy and society. There is a strong body of evidence on the economic value of sport, but much less research on measuring social value. Social Return on Investment (SROI) has emerged as a method for measuring social outcomes related to sport, but unlike for studies that measure economic value, there is no standardised approach. Moreover, generating strong evidence of the extent to which a wide range of outcomes are linked to sport beyond health is challenging. This chapter provides an overview of current research on the social value and SROI of sport in Europe and discusses the challenges for future research and policy implementation and development.
