Sport management and policy in the era of COVID-19

Abstract: The chapter provides an overview of the sport literature on COVID-19, with a focus on Europe to inform: the main issues associated with sport management and policy in the era of COVID-19 in relation to the four associated themes covered in the EU Work Plan for Sport 2021–2024; the knowledge gained about it; and the challenges faced for future research, and for policy emphasis, development and implementation. To do so, data from 18 academic sources were analysed, i.e., five about the impact of the pandemic on sport, four about the possible need for structural modifications, four about the role of public authorities, and five about funding opportunities. The literature reviewed suggests a number of managerial and policy recommendations. Overall, this chapter offers relevant knowledge to assess the outputs of the EU Work Plan for Sport 2021–2024 in relation to COVID-19 and to inform future research and EU sport policies.
