Sport clusters: A triple bottom model for the sport economy?

Abstract: This chapter introduces the context and concept of sport clusters in Europe. I review concrete examples of sport cluster initiatives driven by industry, public authorities, or the non-profit sector. Sport clusters are vectors for economic and social development but bear also potential to positively impact the environmental legacy of sport. I provide a definition of sport clusters and outline the key pillars of the sport cluster concept. This includes a detailed presentation of typical actors in a sport cluster, factors of emergence and decline of a sport cluster, interorganisational dynamics, and consequences and outcomes of a sport cluster. I provide numerous concrete examples for sport clusters in Europe giving an outlook of what sport clusters could be in the future multiplying positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes. Then I close this chapter with a research agenda for sport cluster research.
