Sport and physical activity for all: The social impact of Teqball

Abstract: This chapter aims to illustrate the ability of sport and physical activity to demonstrate social impact through the example of an emerging sport, namely Teqball, a football-based sport played on a specially-curved table. Following an historical contextualisation, six benefits related to the social impact of Teqball are identified then developed: health benefits; creation of social link; inclusivity; fight against isolation; education, learning and development; and intergenerational sharing. Several examples are given in the European context, in particular in France. While some illustrations provided in the chapter go beyond the European case, they still represent insightful knowledge for sport in Europe. Overall, Teqball has potential to deliver the six aforementioned benefits in a unique way, in Europe and beyond. However, to optimise its potential, further research and policy support are required, together with an evolution in line with current technological advancements, including integrating blockchain technology into Teqball federations in Europe and globally.
