Abstract: There is broad academic consensus that sex, gender and sexual identity are pivotal reference points for the sports system and that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer individuals have been marginalised in sporting cultures. At the same time, the academic literature has neglected to analyse the respective lack of inclusion of lgbtiq+ persons in sports over a long period. The chapter starts by discussing the need for establishing inclusive sports cultures against the background of political and legal frameworks before drawing attention to the diversity of individuals covered by the term lgbtiq+. After some methodological issues being raised, the normative structures of the sports system that prevent full inclusion will be characterised. As most of the academic literature is based on studies in the Anglo-American countries, this chapter focuses on findings from two more recent empirical studies about the situation and experiences of lgbtiq+ individuals in European sports.
