Challenges and stakes of the transition from traditional media to new platforms in Europe

Antoine Feuillet

Chapter 28 in Research Handbook on Sport in Europe, 2026, pp 302-312 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the transition from traditional media to digital platforms in the European sports landscape. It highlights disruptions to economic models, the necessary shift to demand-driven strategies, and the increasing influence of new players in a globalized entertainment market. This chapter is divided into three main sections. The first section explores the evolution of the media market in the world of sports, from traditional media to today's new media. The second section focuses on the transformations in how sports are consumed through media and the need to shift toward demand-driven strategies. Finally, the third section proposes rethinking the media strategy for sports in Europe and considers the potential benefits of partially integrating the broadcasting process into the value chain of rights holders.
