Abstract: This chapter examines dual career (DC) athletes’ career development and transition, focusing on challenges and demands they face across their athletic career and at various developmental levels (i.e., athletic, psychological, psychosocial, academic/vocational, financial, legal). Following this, attention turns to the DC competencies that DC athletes are expected to develop to address such transitional challenges and demands. While developing DC competencies as internal resources is considered critical, the significance of external resources such as career assistance programmes is highlighted. To further explore how to better support DC athletes, the field of life skills development and transfer in the sport context is explored. In particular, the critical role that life skills transfer plays in developing DC athletes’ competencies and ability to manage DC and transition is also emphasised. Accordingly, life development interventions are discussed, focusing on how the existing interventions can be adopted and implemented in the context of DC support. Future research directions and recommendations are also discussed.
