Gender equality in sports in Europe: Current state and future challenges

Abstract: The objective of this chapter is to present three areas identified in the current EU Work Plan for Sport (2024) that require decisive action due to the persistent marginalization and unequal treatment experienced by female athletes and women working in the sports sector. These areas are: (1) the underrepresentation of women, particularly in coaching roles and leadership positions within sports organizations and clubs; (2) media coverage of women's sports competitions; and (3) conditions, including remuneration, for female and male athletes, coaches, officials, and staff. The chapter also discusses the reasons why these specific areas have been deemed particularly significant, highlights ongoing progress toward greater gender equality, and identifies the challenges that still need to be addressed.
