Chapter 4 in Circular Practices in Buildings and Construction to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, 2024, pp 41-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a detailed description of the projects that emphasise the different actors and life cycle phases of the construction process supported by the SBC programme; their outputs, and associated achievements. Funding was deployed through the 10YFP Trust Fund process. The first and only SBC Trust Fund call showed a great demand for sustainability in the building sector in the Global South. The programme worked on five initiatives supported by the Trust Fund during the period 2015-22, three of which were based in Colombia, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nepal and India. These projects were delivered as the first phase of research and development on sustainable buildings and construction. Further two Trust Fund projects, based on similar themes, were completed in Egypt and in Latin America with similar timelines, but funded by Ministry of the Environment of Finland. With a new financing mechanism in place for the One Planet Network (OPN), SBC was acknowledged as a high impact sector and was awarded further funding from the One Planet Multi-partner Trust Fund (MPTF) to deliver on projects in Burkina Faso and Sri Lanka. Other UN organizations partnered with the SBC programme to implement SDG12. The chapter concludes by identifying a lack of resource mobilization as a significant barrier to the SBC programme and discusses its impacts. Results of the Trust Fund projects have been expanded from country-specific projects beyond its seeding, however scaling up has remained a challenge.
