SBC achievements and challenges

Chapter 6 in Circular Practices in Buildings and Construction to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, 2024, pp 101-139 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The SBC programme has led research on circular built environments and was the first global programme to draw attention to this topic. The programme focused on opportunities arising from transitioning to circular built environments, particularly in the Global South through leading this innovative research. This chapter presents the results of the primary research on stakeholders’ views and feedback on the SBC programme. It also highlights the achievements and challenges of SBC, and clearly emphasises the importance of continuing the work, particularly to achieve market transformation. The programme has been successful in operationalising and implementing solutions across countries through supporting projects on circular built environments focusing on the Global South. There is still room for innovation and more work to be done to achieve global outcomes. The programme needs to focus more on communicating findings and using the positive feedback loops to assure overall positive impact through investing in successful market strategies. However, the successes were not without challenges. Some of the challenges faced by the SBC programme related to engagement with various stakeholders. The COVID pandemic also posed a major challenge in terms of engagement and collaboration globally. Other challenges were related to leadership, funding, governance, policy framework, upscaling, and mainstreaming. Learning from the past, the future of SBC’s next phase is assured and outcomes to deliver sustainable and circular built environment may continue to be progressed.
