Chapter 7 in Circular Practices in Buildings and Construction to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, 2024, pp 140-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The 10-Year Framework of Programmes on sustainable consumption and production (10YFP) was adopted in 2012 at the World Summit of Sustainable Development, resulting in the formation of the One Planet Network (OPN) to support and accelerate the shift to sustainable consumption and production patterns. OPN is the leading implementation mechanism for Goal 12 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As one of six programmes comprising the OPN, SBC was the first global programme that brought attention to the role and importance of circularity in the built environment. The programme was led by the Ministry of the Environment Finland, UNEP and RMIT University guided by a group of global collaborators and partners. The programme developed a range of guiding principles and developed a work program focusing particularly on the Global South to lock-in sustainable and circular approaches to construction. The SBC programme mapped circularity indicators in the buildings and construction sector against the SDGs. In addition, SBC seeded initiatives and implemented projects, some of which have grown into larger UN initiatives and scalable tools, engaged different stakeholders to mainstream and scale up tools that are adaptable to local contexts. A global platform to mainstream and upscale sustainable buildings and construction practices has been set up to engage various stakeholders, nurture knowledge sharing, develop and disseminate case studies and set up the groundwork to educate and train professionals across the construction industry value chain. The legacy of SBC on circularity continues through the Global Alliance of Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC).
