Development economics for poverty reduction

.

Chapter 1 in Transforming Poor Economies, 2024, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The goal of this book is to construct effective development strategies for agriculture and industry to eradicate hunger and poverty. To achieve this goal, this chapter emphasizes the importance of a relevant analytical framework that integrates the trinity of economic theory, knowledge of reality, and econometrics. Particularly important is field research, which enables researchers to understand what is going on and what the major issues are. After explaining how to conduct field surveys, the limitations of survey-based studies and how to overcome these limitations will be discussed. Subsequently, this chapter outlines the structure of the book, which is based on a large number of case studies on agriculture and industry in Asia and Africa conducted by the author for the last several decades.
