Toward an economics of development strategies
.
Chapter 11 in Transforming Poor Economies, 2024, pp 193-208 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Having studied the basic characteristics of agriculture and industry in Part I; reviewed the historical development of the Green Revolution and transformation into high-value agriculture in Part II; and examined the development of various types of industrial clusters in Part III, this chapter attempts to propose effective development strategies for a Green Revolution particularly in Africa; the transformation of subsistence agriculture into high-value agriculture; the development of industrial clusters; and the role of foreign direct investment-led development. This chapter also compares the impacts of training and credit (or microcredit) on the development of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in poor economies in view of the persistent belief that a lack of access to credit is a major constraint on the growth of MSEs in developing countries. Finally, I try to summarize the essence of the effective development strategies proposed in this book.
