History of the rice Green Revolution

Abstract:
In my view, the Green Revolution in tropical Asia, which took place in the 1970s and 1980s, was the second most important revolutionary change in technology in human history after the Industrial Revolution. While the Malthusian food shortage was avoided because of the Green Revolution in tropical Asia, the fear of food shortage is still real in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where a Green Revolution has not been realized. This chapter traces the evolutionary changes in rice farming from prewar Japan to Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. Then, it addresses the question of why a Green Revolution failed to take place in SSA, even though it successfully took place nearly half a century ago in tropical Asia.
