College sports
Thomas Miceli ()
Chapter 11 in Topics in Sports Economics, 2025, pp 201-213 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines issues related to college athletics. The approach is based on the bundling of academic and athletic components, which is an essential feature of college sports. The analysis examines both the budgetary and allocative consequences of this bundling. It also considers the implications for the training of athletes, given the reality that Division I college sports serve as a de facto minor league for certain professional sports, particularly football and basketball. Various possible reforms of college athletics are considered in light of the analysis.
