Arms embargo

Judith Vorrath

Chapter 18 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 65-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Arms embargoes have been the most commonly used type of sanctions in the United Nations (UN) framework. They remain a relevant means to address threats to peace and security, in particular armed conflict. Despite relevant reforms in the design and implementation of arms embargoes over the years, serious challenges persist. Overall, arms embargoes need better political guidance and adjustment of objectives to changes on the ground. Moreover, implementation and enforcement remain key for the credibility of UN arms embargoes.
