Commodity sanctions
Martijn C. Vlaskamp
Chapter 20 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 72-74 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Commodity sanctions are restrictive measures that limit trade in specific resources, primarily natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals, and agricultural products. This entry discusses the background and characteristics of various forms of commodity sanctions, their impact, and effectiveness. While these sanctions can induce significant economic strain on target countries, they also face limitations such as circumvention and adverse humanitarian consequences. Additionally, the discussion highlights criticisms regarding the humanitarian toll and the potential for sanctions to backfire, affecting both the target and the countries imposing them.
