Diplomatic sanctions

Chapter 23 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 82-83 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Diplomatic sanctions, a key component of foreign policy strategies, serve as a means of political disengagement. They focus on diplomatic actions and objectives, aiming to diplomatically coerce a target and influence its policies and behaviours. One of the main purposes of diplomatic sanctions is to avoid military expenditures, making them viewed as low-cost measures. However, there are potential costs such as the loss of information and intelligence, the undermining of communication, increased misperception, and a reduced ability to promote the interests of the sender of sanctions. Additionally, they may reduce the effectiveness of other coercive foreign policies.
