Sanctions on transport (air, ship, ground)

Chapter 29 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 101-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The transport of goods and persons has been frequently sanctioned since the 1990s, albeit mostly supportive of sanctions banning trade or travel. They have come in many forms and shapes, from outright prohibitions of transport to banning the sale of spare parts for aircraft to selectively addressing the financial aspects of the transport business. While in the 1990s, most explicit transport-related sanctions aimed at air transport, lately the focus has shifted to shipping, for instance, in the case of Western sanctions against North Korea and Iran. The reach of trade sanctions has been extended, for instance, by bans on shipping insurance.
