Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Chapter 34 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 119-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) imposed sanctions on North Korea (DPRK) in reaction to its nuclear and missile programme. Initially targeting individuals and entities linked to the nuclear programme, sanctions later expanded to comprehensive measures that restricted trade, energy access, and financial relations. Despite these efforts, enforcement challenges persist due to evasion tactics. Divisions within the UNSC have stalled further resolutions. Autonomous sanctions by the United States, the EU, and other countries have supplemented UNSC measures, also addressing broader issues such as cyber threats and human rights violations.
