Chapter 40 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 139-141 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Myanmar has faced recurring sanctions since the late 1980s due to a lack of democratic progress and persistent human rights violations. In 1988, the European Union (EU) and the United States imposed initial sanctions following a violent military crackdown on peaceful protests. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, these sanctions were extended in range and scope. This entry reviews the background of these sanctions, their objectives, and their effects.
