Gendered effects of sanctions

Loraine Rickard-Martin

Chapter 54 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 184-186 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: While the precise effects of sanctions, whether comprehensive or targeted, are difficult to discern, they have unintended impacts on populations, and particularly on vulnerable groups including women and girls. There is much more information on the gendered effects of comprehensive sanctions than on targeted sanctions. The use of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council against perpetrators of sexual- and gender-based violence (S/GBV) and conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) has been slow and sporadic, with very few perpetrators made to face the consequences.
